Last year I met several dancers while I was photographing a theatrical production. I loved watching the dancers rehearse and perform. This year I thought I would assign myself a project that would serve as the photojournalism part of my portfolio. Dance in America from the grass roots level came to mind and I have already begun the project. I contacted two of the dancers I met and they were enthusiastic about participating and were able to refer me to others that they thought would help. I plan on doing the photography and the writing and then trying to sell the finished project to a publisher.
The focus will be on young dancers just starting up to professionals who are dancing or teaching for a living. I will also be photographing a number of dance styles from classical ballet to ethnic dancing. Here are some photos that I have taken so far.
This is one of the dancers who I met last year.
A ballet class at the Berks Ballet Theater
A Creative Movement class for youngsters
A class in West African dance
A rehearsal performance by the Berks Ballet Theater
What's dancing without leg warmers?
This project will last most of the year so I am trying to take my time and get the shots I want. There will be rehearsal photos, class photos, and some set piece images that will be set up and lit. Probably some interesting outdoor work. I see ballerinas on rooftops, jazz dancers in the street. I will be cool.
A little "fine art" doesn't hurt
